KERALA RELIEF INITIATIVE

A brief about the worst affected area in Kuttinand, Kerala

Kerala Relief Initiative

Massive floods across Kerala have killed over 350 people and displaced scores of families. Floodwaters have started receding slowly and in the aftermath, most places find countless families discovering their homes being completely destroyed.

The Government along with the Army, Navy, Air Force, NGOs and other organisations have mounted a massive relief effort to restore normalcy in most parts of Kerala. The residents of Kuttinanad, however, remain refuges in the mainland of Alappuzha and Changanassery in Kottayam district, where they have been lodged in camps since August 15.

Flood is not new to Kuttanad, which is 2.2 metres below sea level. This monsoon, along with the heavy flow from the rivers, the poor discharge through two regulators has resulted in the floodwater staying in the region. Water would usually flood the paddy fields, but on this occasion it has submerged the whole village.

According to official data, paddy cultivation spread over 8,500 hectares has perished, as has 80 per cent of the live stock. There is no power supply in Kuttanad. All transformers are in flood water, as are hundred of pump sets that drain the fields for cultivation. Even if water recedes, beginning of cultivation would take much time which makes survival difficult moving forward. Kuttanad has been surviving on backwater fishing, paddy cultivation and tourism. The flood has hit the houseboat/resort tourism sector too. It will take a long time for Kuttanad to come to terms with the situation as the entire region will have to surface from scratch.

The Life Anchors a not-for-profit foundation, run by a team of professionals & businessmen have decided to meaningfully contribute to this mammoth effort in their own humble way by identifying & rehabilitating 5 to 10 families from the worst affected Kuttanad region with least of the resources of their own and vetted & endorsed by the Collector of the region as really deserving cases.

Your generous contributions will help us collect a substantial amount that would help us reach out in concern and care. Please support a worthy cause.

Updates on utilization of the funds collected will be posted here periodically for your update and satisfaction.
